Wolves lose to Whalers

The Sudbury Wolves returned to action at the Sudbury Arena Friday night to host the Plymouth Whalers. Despite coming out to an early lead, the Wolves were unable to hang on and lost the contest by a final score of 4-2.
The Wolves came out strong in the first period, however, it was the Whalers who got on the board first at the 3:39 mark with a goal by Sudbury area native Vern Cooper. The Wolves tied up the contest before the end of the frame on a goal by Akim Aliu with assists from Matt Dias and John McFarland.
Midway through the second frame, the Wolves took the lead on a bullet shot from Frankie Santini, his first of the season, and was assisted by Jared Staal and John Kurtz. The Wolves would take the lead into the second intermission.
In the third period, the Whalers tied it up at the 6:27 minute mark and then took the lead 39 seconds later on a goal by Leo Jenner. The Wolves were unable to put one passed Whalers netminder Matt Hackett and the Whalers added an empty netter the final minute to win the game by a final score of 4-2.
Sudbury Wolves starting netminder Alain Valiquette had a solid outing making 37 saves for the loss, while Hackett made 33 saves in the winning effort.
The Wolves will have to regroup as they head on the road to the Hershey Center for a matchup against the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors this afternoon. Game time is 4 p.m.
