The Sudbury Wolves travelled to Mississauga Sunday afternoon after coming off a 5-2 loss against the Belleville Bulls Friday night and a 3-2 victory over the Niagara IceDogs Saturday night.
The Wolves fell to the St. Michael's Majors on Sunday by a final score of 5-4, but still managed to come away with a playoff spot.
Going into action on Sunday, the Wolves held the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference by one point over the Oshawa Generals.
The Wolves were playing their final regular season game against the Majors while at the other end of Peel, the Generals were playing their final regular season game in Brampton.
There were many scenarios, and most of them had the chance to play out, but with the tie, the Wolves secured at least a tie-breaker game and with the eventual shoot-out loss by the Generals, the Wolves are in.
The Wolves began Sunday's contest very strong and were the first to hit the board with a goal at the 6:27 mark by Marcus Foligno and assisted by Peter Hermenegildo and Gerome Giudice.
The Majors responded quickly though and tied things up less than a minute later on a shorthanded goal from Jared Gomes. Just over two minutes later, the Majors took the 2-1 lead with a goal by Jordan Mayer.
The Wolves regrouped and tied the game with an unassisted goal by Matt Dias. After a wild first period, the teams went into the first intermission tied 2-2.
The Wolves came out in the second period with the momentum from the end of the first period, and regained the lead within the early minutes on an unassisted goal by Eric O'Dell.
The Wolves then added to their lead at the 7:56 minute mark with a power play goal by Hermenegildo assisted by Jake Cardwell and John Kurtz. The Majors cut the lead in half in the closing minutes with a power play goal from Devante Smith-Pelly.
The Wolves had the 4-3 lead heading into the final frame, and applied all kinds of pressure but were unable to solve Majors netminder J.P. Anderson. The Majors scored the tying goal at 4:02 of the period scored by Smith-Pelly. Neither team was able to retake the lead, so the game headed into overtime. The tie at the end of regulation gave the Wolves a much needed point on the day.
The Majors scored the game winner at the 3:17 mark which came on the Majors powerplay and scored by William Wallen.
Sudbury Wolves netminder Andrew Loverock had another terrific outing, making 27 in the loss, while Anderson was very solid making 39 saves for the win.
The Sudbury Wolves will now travel to Belleville Wednesday night to face off against the Bulls in round one of the playoff series. Game two will be Thursday night in Belleville as well, before the Wolves return to the Sudbury Area Sunday night for game three of the series. Game time will be 7:00 p.m.
