Sudbury Wolves forward David Goyette's third-period goal with just two seconds remaining sent Wednesday's game against the Soo Greyhounds into overtime.

The Sudbury Wolves were at home on Wednesday night to do battle against Northern Ontario rivals the Soo Greyhounds

Charlie Schenkel was the starting goaltender for the Greyhounds while Carolina Hurricanes prospect Jakub Vondras was in goal for the hometown the Pack.

Despite winning the first period in the shots-on-goal department 8-7, the Wolves remained deadlocked in a scoreless tie after the first 20 minutes of play.

The Soo peppered Vondras with shots in the second period, but failed to solve the goalie until there were fewer than three minutes remaining in the period. That’s when Marco Mignosa scored his ninth of the season to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.

With exactly one minute remaining in the middle frame, Bryce McConnell-Barker found the back of the net for Sault Ste. Marie, his 11th of the season, to give the Soo a 2-0 lead with one minute remaining in regulation.

The Wolves new star forward Dalibor Dvorsky would cut into the Greyhounds’ lead at the 6:36 mark of the third period to make the score 2-1 for the Soo.

Throughout the remainder of the period, Sudbury dominated on the puck possession front, but couldn’t score against Schenkel until just three seconds remaining when David Goyette scored his 13th of the season to tie the game 2-2 and send it into overtime.

The Wolves fought hard in the extra minutes, but at 2:08 Andrew Gibson scored his fourth goal of the season to cap off a 3-2 road win for the Greyhounds.

The Wolves continued to struggle on the power play in this game, going one-for-five, compared to the Greyhounds 50/50 performance with the man advantage.

With the loss, the Wolves now hold a record of 13-10-1-1, good enough for third in the OHL’s Central Division and 11th overall.

The Wolves are back on home ice Dec. 8 against the Niagara IceDogs with a scheduled start time of 7:05 p.m. followed by an afternoon game on Dec. 10, as former Wolves captain Jacob Holmes and the Kingston Frontenacs visit Sudbury with a scheduled start time of 2:05 p.m.
