The Sudbury Wolves are now tied for third
overall in the Eastern Conference with Mississauga, after
winning two out of three games over the weekend.
On Friday, it was a night to celebrate heroes
and for a hero to emerge at the Sudbury Arena.
The Wolves hosted a special presentation by
Hockey Canada which celebrated the 1938 Sudbury Wolves senior
team's World Championship victory.
A large crowd of 4,799 fans saw a
championship banner raised to the roof of the arena, and jersey
presentations to surviving family members of the players from
the championship team almost 70 years ago.
The Wolves then went out and beat the Barrie
Colts 3-2, thanks to a late third period goal by Bobby Chaumont
with just 3:45 remaining.
It was Chaumont's second goal of the
night and his team-leading 28th goal of the season.
Wolves head coach and GM Mike Foligno said
it's always a tough win when the Wolves manage to squeak by
Barrie.
Â"When we play Barrie, they always seem to be
close games,Â" said Foligno. Â"We always have to push
ourselves. We made some mental errors. It's always a tough
game against these guys. We had great goaltending from Patrick
Ehelechner. It's not going to get easier as we go. There
will be more playoff style hockey to play.Â"
The win, over a team that has given Sudbury
fits in the past, provided an extra boost to the club.
Â"It's a huge win for us,Â" said veteran
Luke Dubbin. Â"It gives the guys a lot of motivation when we
beat these guys.Â"
The win was important.
Â"It's huge to beat them right now
because we are trying to get up in the standings,Â" said
Martynowski. Â"It was a playoff game. It was an ugly win, but
we got the two points.Â"
Chaumont was feeling good after bulging the
twine twice to help the Wolves secure victory.
Â"It definitely feels great,Â" said Chaumont.
Â"I haven't been producing much lately, and it was nice to
get a few on the board. Everybody played hard and battled. We
came back twice in the game to win it.Â"
Martynowski scored the other goal for the
Wolves.
Ehelechner made 32 saves for the win.
On Saturday, the Wolves hosted their first
ever Sudbury Saturday Night regular season home game on a big
promotion event sponsored by Inco Ltd.
The Wolves pounded the visiting Oshawa
Generals 4-2 in front of over 5,000 screaming fans.
The Wolves got goals from Chaumont,
Martynowski, Kevin Baker and Ryan Hastings.
Ehelechner was sharp again in net for the
Wolves, making 31 saves.
On Sunday, the Wolves were dropped 4-2 by the
hottest team in the Eastern Conference, the Toronto St.
Michael's Majors in Toronto.
Baker scored the two goals for the Wolves,
while Ehelechner made 30 saves.
The Wolves now have a record of
26-22-4-4.
The Wolves are back in action Thursday
against the Colts in Barrie.
The Wolves then play two home games. On
Friday, they host the Brampton Battalion, and on Sunday, they
host the Saginaw Spirit.
