Wolves woes not so bad, High school athletes sky high

Hey sports fans, it's time to lift the lid off the local athletics scene and see what's cooking.

For the appetizer, I'll start with high school sports.

My hat is off to the Lockerby Vikings senior boys' volleyball team and the Lasalle Lancers senior girls' basketball team for punching their tickets to the AAA OFSAA Championships, which start on Thursday in Toronto and Brockville respectively.

Both teams will be in tough at the provincial championships, but they both could come back hauling some medals.

For Lockerby, it's the second time in the last three years they've won the NOSSA AAA crown. Maybe the third time at OFSAA will result in gold.

For Lasalle, it's the team's ninth straight trip to the provincial dance. Last year, they finished fourth. This could finally be their year to make some huge noise by winning gold.

Now for the main course, some Sudbury Wolves stuff.

Starting goalie Sebastian Dahm is regaining his 2007 playoff form, and it's coming at the right time.

Dahm put up MVP numbers in the playoff run to the final, but in the first two months of the 2007-08 season, he was struggling.

In September, he went 0-3 with a 5.79 goals-against-average (GAA) and a .871 save percentage.

In October, he was marginally better, posting a 3-5 record along with a 3.44 GAA and a .911 save percentage.

In November, so far, Dahm has been nothing short of spectacular. He has a 3-4 record, but his GAA is 2.99 and he has a sizzling .925 save percentage.

In his last six games, Dahm hasn't allowed more than three goals and given the Wolves a realistic chance to win every one of those games.
For dessert, I'll dish out some rumours.

There's talk the Wolves might be involved in some trades soon. (It might even happen before this article runs in the paper.)

There's speculation from sources the Wolves are in the running to land Oshawa's James DeLory and Shea Kewin, who were both suspended recently for unknown reasons. I've heard names like Matt Dias and Dahm going for those players. There's also plenty of talk of Sault Ste. Marie's Sean Jones being sent to Sudbury for Dias. Of course this is all speculation, but it's still juicy.

If the Wolves want to make the playoffs, they will need Dahm or another strong goalie to do it. If they send Dahm packing and don't get a top goalie in return, you can be assured the Wolves are raising the white flag for the season.
