Local dining at its best in the fall

I grew up in the countryside, where eating locally was as simple as going out to the garden to pick a tomato. I learned about edible wilds walking through the fields at Grandpa’s farm.

Our goal was to hike to the highest point in Ontario, Ishpatina Ridge, not all that far northeast of Sudbury. We were dropped off at the northerly end of the Sturgeon River just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

I don't like the north wind in December. It blows so fiercely down our bay. The waves smash violently on the shore. The near-freezing water roils, black and ominous. It chills me to the bone. Overnight, it blows itself out.
