The search continues for missing teen boy, last seen Monday evening
Greater Sudbury Police have once again asked the public's assistance in locating 14-year-old Denis Hume, last seen in Lively on June 17. On Sunday morning, Police suggested through Twitter that the teen may be in the company of a friend named Anthony. Anyone with information is asked to contact Greater Sudbury Police at 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers at 705-222-TIPS. Read the full story here.
Garson fire, displacing two families
Two homes are severely damaged and two families are displaced after a fire in Garson on Friday evening, resulting in more than $750,000 in damages, said André Laurin of Greater Sudbury Fire Services. The fire is believed to have been started in, around or above a shed located behind one of the three properties affected by the event. Two of the houses have been deemed unlivable, while the third was damaged only "slightly" by exposure, said Laurin. There were no injuries reported in relation to the fire. Read the full story here.
Woman dies falling overboard Manitoulin ferry
A woman was found dead Friday, after falling overboard a ferry travelling from South Baymouth to Tobermory in Lake Huron, said Manitoulin OPP in a press release. Manitoulin and Grey Bruce OPP responded to the call around 11:26 p.m. June 21, joined shortly thereafter by the Manitoulin OPP Marine Unit and the Canadian Coast Guard, who were able to locate the body of the deceased. Camp for children with cancer scrambling after flood causes $15K in damages
The spring flooding that occurred in some areas of Northern Ontario as all that snow we received during the winter of 2018-2019 melted has had unfortunate consequences for Camp Quality Northern Ontario. The camp, which runs this year July 6-12 out of a camp in Monetville on the West Arm of Lake Nipissing, is a non-profit, volunteer organization providing a camping experience and year-round support for children with cancer and their families. Kathryn Kettle, marketing and community outreach intern with Camp Quality Northern Ontario, said about $15,000 worth of equipment was damaged and rendered unusable. Read the full story here.
Over $50,000 raised for cancer research at the 20th annual Relay for Life
Laurentian University hosted the 20th annual Relay for Life this past Friday, celebrating survivors, honouring those lost and raising over $50,000 for cancer research. The event included a variety of activities and entertainment, meant to inspire participants in their fight and help them reflect upon the journey of those touched by cancer. AFE reports three wildland fires in the Northeast Region
There are now three wildland fires in the Northeast Region, the latest found Saturday afternoon, said the most recent fire report by Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFE). Sudbury 7 was found on Clark Island on the south side of French River Provincial Park, and although classified as 'not under control,' is being held at 0.1 of a hectare. As of 5 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Cochrane 8 was 'under control' at 3.5 hectares. And last but not least, Timmins 2 remains classified as 'not under control' at 4,645 hectares. Three years ago, almost to the day, Sophia Zulich appeared to have the basketball world at her feet. But as anyone who has ever worked with elite athletics understands all too well, these journeys seldom follow a consistent upward trajectory. Challenges will arise, hurdles will be encountered, potential pitfalls are forever looming. Thankfully, showcasing the same dogged determination that makes her such a tough matchup in the paint, Zulich would both persevere and prevail, rewarded just last week with the official notification that she would join the University of Denver Pioneers come the fall of 2019. West Arm, French and Lower Pickerel rivers still under flood warning
A flood warning has been extended by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry once again until July 28 for residents in the West Arm area of Lake Nipissing, as well as the French and Lower Pickerel River Watersheds. That includes the Municipality of St. Charles, Municipality of French River and the Municipality of Killarney, McConkey Township, Blair Township, Mowat Township and Henvey Inlet First Nation. Sudbury Indie Cinema celebrates official grand opening
Sudbury Indie Cinema celebrated its official grand opening ceremony Wednesday evening. Several dignitaries were on hand for the event, including Greater Sudbury Deputy Mayor Al Sizer and Sudbury MPP Jamie West, with Sudbury MP Paul Lefebvre joining in via video chat from Ottawa. The special guests of the evening, however, were the co-op members themselves, said Sudbury Indie Cinema director Beth Mairs. Read the full story here.
