Canada wins gold at World Junior Championships

Canada's World Junior Hockey team won gold in the Czech Republic on Sunday, in a photo-finish, come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Russia. The match got off to a rocky start for Canada, but it all came together in the final frame. Down two goals to their Russian counterparts in the third, the team battled back with three goals in third to secure Canada's first World Junior Championship gold since 2008. Canada Post community boxes targeted by thieves over the Holidays

The community mailboxes that have replaced door-to-door delivery in much of the country are proving to be a popular target for thieves, particularly this Christmas season in Greater Sudbury. As of Dec. 24, police had received 40 reports of someone breaking into the boxes, Greater Sudbury Police spokesperson Kaitlyn Dunn said Friday. As of Jan. 3, that number has risen to almost 130, Dunn said. Read the full story here

Cannabis extraction lab determined as the cause of apartment fire on Barrydowne

Greater Sudbury Police have determined that the residential fire that occurred at an apartment complex on Barrydowne Road Jan. 3, was the result of a "clandestine cannabis marijuana extraction lab." No one in the apartment complex was harmed aside from the 40-year-old suspect, who was sent to Health Sciences North with minor injuries and released later that day. Read the full story here

Crash on Hwy 144 results in hospitalization of driver

A driver was transported to hospital Friday with serious injuries, following a single-vehicle collision on Highway 144. The investigation has been concluded. No charges have been laid. Read the full story here

OPP seize $100K in drugs, guns and stolen property

Three people are facing a host of charges following a Dec. 16 raid by the Manitoulin OPP that netted more than $100,000 in stolen vehicles, drugs, weapons and other items. “The Manitoulin OPP is requesting anyone who has had property stolen which has not yet been recovered to come forward in an attempt to identify some property,” police said in the news release. Sudburians helped Syrian refugee family when they arrived in 2015; now they're helping city's less fortunate

Hussein Qarquoz said when his family came to Sudbury just over four years ago, in December 2015, they received a warm welcome and a lot of help from the community. The Syrian refugees were sponsored to come to Canada by St. Andrew's United Church. A baker by trade, Qarquoz opened his own eatery, Damascus Cafe and Bakery, coming up on two years ago, in April 2018. Read the full story here

Wolves stampede over Colts and out of their losing streak

The Sudbury Wolves celebrated victory Friday for the first time since star centre Quinton Byfield left the Pack to represent Team Canada at the World Junior Tournament in the Czech Republic. Wolves fall short in a close match against the Windsor Spitfires

Just one day after breaking free of a losing streak, the Sudbury Wolves lost a close one to the Windsor Spitfires on Jan. 4.
