Students at Churchill Public School in Sudbury will jump start Thanksgiving on Wednesday when they sit down beside Rainbow District School Board trustees and superintendents and enjoy a turkey dinner.

The fall harvest feast is an annual tradition at the school, spokesperson Nicole Charette said in a press release.

All students and staff participate. Intermediate, junior and primary students eat together. The feast gives students a sense of community by creating a family dinner atmosphere.

"Each class at Churchill assumes some responsibility for the feast," said principal Dave Farrow. "It's a wonderful way to give thanks."

Some classes make stuffing. Others make desserts, butter buns or slice pickles and celery sticks. Each student designs a placemat for the special day and donates a potato and carrot.

Parent volunteers help stage the event. Some cook vegetables and turkeys while others serve the students.

Churchill Public School is home to some 400 students from JK to Grade 8.
