The Learning Through Trails program has come to an end, along with another school year. From September 2009 to June 2009, we have visited more than 60 classes at 19 different schools from the Rainbow District School Board and Sudbury District Catholic School Board. We have delivered curriculum-based programs to nearly 1,400 students over the last 10 months, introducing them (and their teachers) to the outdoor classroom. It has been a great adventure.

Now that school is out for the summer, Learning Through Trails staff have a new initiative that we are undertaking: the Rainbow ROUTES Family Nature Club. This club is free of charge, and is intended to allow families in the Greater Sudbury area to bond in and with the outdoors along various trails. Meetings take place on Sunday afternoons from 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., and each meeting is based on a particular habitat that can be found around the Greater Sudbury area. The first meeting, to be held June 28, will be based on wetlands. More details can be found on our website www.rainbowroutes.com .

If you are interested in joining the Family Nature Club, or simply want some more information, please contact Geoff at [email protected] or by calling 674-4455 x 2474. Grandparents are most welcome. Space is limited.

The Outdoor Classroom is a monthly feature submitted by staff of the Learning Through Trails program. A Rainbow ROUTES Association initiative, Learning Through Trails encourages teachers to use the outdoor classroom to enhance their charges’ learning experience, increase their physical activity, and foster an appreciation for the outdoors.
