With the Halloween seasonal category up nearly 10 percent, Wal-Mart Canada released its top Halloween trends as adults, children and even family pets show increased enthusiasm for the upcoming holiday.
The trends underline the popularity of Halloween traditions,
including dressing up, decorating, trick-or-treating for
candies, and themed
parties.
Halloween is Wal-Mart Canada's number-two holiday for home décor and party planning (behind Christmas) and the fourth-busiest shopping time of the year (behind Christmas, back-to-school and Mother's Day).
This year, Canadians are expected to spend more than $1 billion on candy, pumpkins, costumes, decorations, cards and related Halloween paraphernalia.
Wal-Mart Canada sales data suggests Ontarian pet owners lead the pack in pet costume sales. Compared to 2006, sales of pet costumes are up more than 10 times.
Canada. Recognizing this growing trend, Wal-Mart  boasts one of the largest assortments of Halloween costumes for dogs. Pampered pooches have the choice of dressing up as Tinkerbell, Snow White and Cinderella, Jack Sparrow, Spiderman, Power Ranger, Donald Duck and Winnie the Pooh.
 The popularity of Halloween among adults continues to grow as well. There has been an increase in plus-size costume sales.
This year's top Halloween costume choices for men are zombie, pirate and beer keg man. Women have shown a preference for pumpkin girl, pirate, and fairy costumes. As for children, boys will be sporting costumes of their favourite superheroes from Spiderman to Batman, and, once again, girls will be transformed into princesses of all types.
