There are a lot of singles in Greater Sudbury according to
singles organizer Helen Garner.
She has been organizing singles events for years including
being a past President of Parents Without Partners from 1991 to
1993. She went on to open and operate her own Business called
Singles Are Us until the end of 1999. It is still running at
the Howard Johnson Hotel on Brady Street.
"There are 160,000 people here so you can guarantee there are
lots of singles out there," said Garner.
"Sudbury is like everywhere else. People do not stay together
like they used to. They have a different value system," she
said.
Garner is launching new activities for people to include
divorced,widowed and other singles.
Her activities feature an enjoyable, relaxed, non-pressure
atmosphere with groups of fun, engaging men and women with
personal introductions.
Activities include dinners, dancing, pool nights, karaoke,
coffee and conversion (which is held at either a members home
or a planned location), and walks at Bell Park. An evening is
planned to see Andrew Lowe on Saturday Feb. 23 at the 1500 Pub
near The Four Corners area of the city's south end.
"We have a place where singles can make friends and have a
place to meet and greet. Members get a discount for dances,"
said Garner.
Membership is $25 for six months. Members can enjoy the energy
and enthusiasm of others singles just like themselves in a
comfortable surrounding she said.
"Our philosophy is that it's all about finding friends and a
group that feels right, and happens naturally."
In time there will be children's activities put in place so
single parents will have a place to take their children and
able to have get-togethers for them as well.
"This way the children will have somewhere to meet others that
are going through the same thing as they are. The group will be
run very much like Parents Without Partners was run," she said.
When people are relaxed and enjoying themselves, their best
side comes through, she said.
"This is one of the reasons the group will have such a success
rate. This is a proven approach to meeting other singles."
Meetings will be held every second week and a dance is planned
for Saturday March 8, 9 pm-1 am at Howard Johnson Hotel Brady
Street. The band The Wild Horses will play a mix of music. The
cost is $10 for members, $12 for non-members or $15 at the
door. Tickets will be available at Howard Johnson Hotel or Jet
Laundry Music.
