The Sudbury & District Health Unit is giving citizens tips on how to stay safe in the heat.

High heat and humidity can be a threat to health, according to a release from the health unit.

Signs and symptoms of heat related illness include breathing rapidly, feeling weak or fainting, being more tired than usual, and developing a headache or confusion. If you or someone in your care experiences these symptoms, contact a health care professional, friend, or family member for help. In emergencies, call 911.

Here are some tips on how to prevent heat-related illness:

· Be sun safe, seek shade, wear a wide-brimmed hat and use an SPF 30+
sunscreen.
· Stay cool by wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting, and lightweight clothing.
· Drink lots of water and 100 per cent natural juices. Avoid drinks made with
alcohol or caffeine.
· Take lots of rest breaks, preferably in the shade or in an air-conditioned area
such as a library, community centre, shopping mall or a cooler area of your
building.
· Reschedule outdoor activities when heat and humidity have passed.
· Check in at least once a day on family, friends and neighbours who may
have difficulty dealing with the heat.
