After the idea came to Anna Maria Barsanti in 2013, the 100 Strong Campaign has raised thousands of dollars for local charities. This year is no different, thanks to those who participated in the fourth annual event this year on June 24.

Though virtual, the event inspired community members to exceed the goal for this year. A release from the organization said not only were there 103 participants, located everywhere from the City of Greater Sudbury and Atikameksheng Anishinaabek to Dorchester, Toronto, Gore Bay, Trenton, Napanee, British Columbia, Australia and the United Kingdom.

At the end of the hour, participants had raised $10,700 for the winning charity, SACY - Sudbury Action Centre for Youth, an organization that promotes support for Sudbury youth and community harm reduction.

In a previous release, Barsanti detailed the events leading up to the 100 Strong hour.

“Participants reached out this spring and encouraged me to organize the event once again so they would have an opportunity to support a local charity,” said Barsanti in a release.  “COVID has had an adverse impact on the lives of many people in our community. Supporting a local charity is one way of giving back.”

Every participant contributed $100 and each contribution equaled one vote the participant could use to nominate a local charity. Charities were entered into the draw only once, regardless of how many times they were nominated, and were required to be local.

Five ballots were drawn from the nominated charities. Those who nominated the charities selected needed to convince the group to vote for their charity, with the winning charity, SACY, receiving the funds raised.
