Huntington University hosts an awareness event Monday aimed at highlighting the 30th anniversary of the United Church’s apology to First Nations peoples for its involvement in residential schools.

The event starts at 4 p.m. Sept. 26 at the Huntington University Social Centre, and proceeds to the cairn in parking lot 15.

Students, staff and faculty from all of the universities in the federation – Huntington University, Laurentian University, Thorneloe University and University of Sudbury – will be invited to take part in this event.

Participants will learn that a cairn, located on the university campus, was erected in honour of the apology, which was given in Greater Sudbury 30 years ago.

They will also discover more about that historic event, the construction of the cairn and its significance, as well as the reconciliation journey.

Elder Art Petahtegoose from Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation, as well as members of the Waabishki Mkwaa (White Bear) Singers will also participate in this event.

Please note that parking availability at both Huntington University and in parking lot 15 may be extremely limited. Contact Christine Catt at ccatt@huntingtonu.ca or by phone at 705-673-4126 ext. 211 to make arrangements for access.
