Despite recent controversy surrounding Wenrick Kennels, which has the contract for Sudbury's animal control services, the organization passed an unannounced inspection Feb. 25 by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food and the Sudbury branch of the S.P.C.A.

There is currently a petition circulating in Sudbury which makes allegations that animals under the care of Wenrick Kennels are not being treated properly, and the contract with the city should not be renewed. The petition was signed by 1,200 people.

City council held a closed-door meeting on the contract last week and gave direction to city staff to renew the contract with Wenrick Kennels. There had been a competing bid by local veterinarian Rod Jouppi.

Richard Paquette, who runs Wenrick Kennels, e-mailed a copy of the inspection report to media outlets this week.

"Due to complaints received by the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, I (Craig Richardson of the Ministry of Agriculture) and Tracy Lapping, agent of the O.S.P.C.A. (Sudbury branch O.S.P.C.A) made an unannounced inspection of this pound," it says in the comment area of the inspection report.

"All animals appear to be well cared for. We did not find any justification for this complaints."
