The Greater Sudbury Police Service Traffic Management Unit, Uniform Patrol Division and Marine Unit will be on patrol Canada Day regulating the safe flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic and the safe operation of vessels on Ramsey Lake.

Roadways around Bell Park, Science North, Health Sciences North and several intersecting streets will be monitored for prohibited parking.

Ramsey Lake and the boat launch area will be monitored for proper safety equipment and alcohol consumption.

Vehicle parking and pedestrian traffic are prohibited at the former St. Joseph Hospital site. Anyone on the property will be ticketed.

Vehicles parked in prohibited areas, grassed areas, sidewalks or obstructing driveways and/or intersections will be ticketed and/or towed.

Parking along the curb of York Street will be prohibited on Canada Day, as well as, mounting the curb on any of our roadways is also prohibited. The two parking lots off York Street across from the Grace Hartman Amphitheatre (Bell Park) will be open on Canada Day with limited, first-come, first-serve parking.

The boat launch and access roads to the beach areas off Ramsey Lake Road will be monitored to ensure that vehicles are not blocking access routes. The boat launch parking lot is for vehicles with boats only and not for general parking.

Access to Health Sciences North for emergency vehicles will monitored and maintained. Vehicles parked illegally will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

The Greater Sudbury Police Marine Unit will be patrolling Ramsey Lake checking for boaters that may be consuming alcohol and ensuring boaters do not operate their vessels within the drop zone during the fireworks.

Officers will be on shore to ensure that boaters have all the required safety equipment before leaving the boat launch. Please ensure that you check your equipment before leaving home. For more information on boat safety please visit, Transport Canada, Marine Safety.

Sudbury Transit

Sudbury Transit will be providing shuttle rides to and from Science North, departing from the TSC Hardware entrance of the Southridge Mall and the Downtown Bus Depot, every 30 minutes from 11:45 a.m. until 9:45 p.m. The shuttle rides to Science North will stop at 9:45 p.m. Return trips from Science North begin immediately after the fireworks at approximately 10:45 p.m. until midnight.

The cost is $1.00 per person and includes the return trip. This means of transportation is encouraged due to the limited parking available and to discourage parking in prohibited areas.

Additional parking is available in the parking lots on either side of York Street at Paris intersection.

Temporary road closures

The following intersections will be closed starting at 10 p.m. until after the fireworks have concluded;

  • Paris Street closed at Ramsey Lake Road; northbound traffic on Paris Street will be directed to take Centennial Drive. Only local traffic on Ramsey Lake Road will be permitted. After the fireworks all traffic from Science North will be directed southbound (left) onto Paris Street.
  • Paris Street closed at Boland Avenue; southbound traffic on Paris Street will be directed westbound (right) onto Boland Avenue.
  • Paris Street closed at York Street; traffic from Ripple Street at York Street will be directed to Regent Street.
  • Paris Street traffic will not be able to turn onto York Street. After the fireworks, all traffic from the York Street parking lots will be directed towards Regent Street.

Once the fireworks have concluded, motorists are asked to move away from the highly populated area of Science North and Bell Park.

Motorists will not be allowed to travel southbound on Paris towards the downtown core. Please plan your exit accordingly in order to avoid congestion and frustration.

“Please ensure that you take your time leaving the Canada Day Celebrations,” said a GSPS news relase.

“Be patient and abide by the rules and regulations of the road. The Traffic Management Unit is advising pedestrians to use crosswalks to avoid unnecessary risk to themselves and others. Also consider carpooling and using Sudbury Transit to help alleviate traffic congestion.”
