The Espanola Animal Hospital is holding a canine blood drive on July 16 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
“Summer is a really high demand period for blood products for us and our plasma bank has been practically wiped out and we need to replenish it,” said a news release from the hospital.
“We're expecting to see a spike in parvo virus, too, with the weather we've had and will need additional blood products for that potentially.”
Just like humans, dogs need blood transfusions. Your dog could save the life of up to four other dogs with one donation.
Dogs and puppies being treated for severe blood loss, parvovirus, severe burns, clotting disorders or anemia all require blood products.
Suitable donors meet all of these criteria:
• calm and quiet disposition;
• between one and 10 years of age;
• up to date on all core vaccines;
• negative 2016 heartworm test;
• currently on heartworm prevention, and;
• weigh at least 66 lbs or more.
