City councillors said they want to add bicycle lanes to the city's roads, and are looking at several options to add them in a cost-effective manner.

At a council meeting on Sept. 15, Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez brought up the issue. He asked Greg Clausen, the general manager of infrastructure services, if the department had looked at the possibility of adding bicycle lanes to Paris Street in the downtown, where construction has been ongoing since the start of summer.

Clausen noted there was more to adding bicycle lanes than simply making space and painting lines, and that the incline of the road had to be considered for proper drainage and other factors. The city could not consider adding the lanes with the province only affording funding for a "shave and pave" operation.

Ward 7 Coun. Russ Thompson, who sits on the bicycle panel, suggested the paved section between city sidewalks and roads be considered as potential bicycle lanes. The section of Regent Street along Lake Ramsey, for example, uses the section as a bicycle lane.

Clausen noted the option was being considered, and the legal department was looking at options to change the bylaw that prohibits cyclists from using these boulevards.
