After more than a year, Greater Sudbury has a permanent CAO.

Ed Archer started work Monday, the city said in a news release, filling the job vacant since April 2015, when Doug Nadorozny was let go.

“We are excited to have Mr. Archer as our new CAO,” Mayor Brian Bigger is quoted as saying in the release. “He brings with him a wealth of experience, passion for serving our community, and will take our municipality to the next level.”

HR director Kevin Fowke held the position on an interim basis. Greater Sudbury Airport CEO Bob Johnston held the interim job until last fall, when he was let go after a dispute with Bigger. Johnston is back at the airport and Fowke returns to HR.

Archer will have several key hires to make as he takes the helm. Several senior managers have left the organization since the October 2014 municipal election, including the head of the city's finance department and, most recently, former Sudbury Transit director Roger Sauvé.

Archer’s first week will see him meeting his staff, as well as attending Tuesday's city council meeting.

Originally from Thunder Bay, Archer was most recently interim CAO in Regina, where he was also the chief financial officer. Before that, he worked in Barrie as the GM of community and corporate services.

“I am excited to join the team at the City of Greater Sudbury and look forward to starting a new chapter in this wonderful community,” Archer said in the release.

“I strongly believe that municipal government plays an important role in the quality of life for residents and I’m looking forward to working with the mayor and city council to help shape the direction the city will take in the coming years.”

Archer is a member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada and a graduate of Lakehead University, with a Bachelor of Administration degree (accounting) and Bachelor of Arts degree (history).
