Designed to address the unique legal challenges faced by youth and their families, Sudbury District Restorative Justice (SDRJ) is launching a new initiative called the Legal Navigation program. The program aims to provide comprehensive support, education and guidance for youth and their families as they try to navigate the justice system.

A release from SDRJ states they are a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting restorative justice principles and practices in the Sudbury District. Through education, advocacy, and community partnerships, SDRJ works to build “a more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable society.”

"So often youth and families become bewildered with the legal system,” said Jackie Balleny, executive director. “Navigating access, rules and procedures, deciphering paperwork, and understanding their rights and responsibilities can be overwhelming. Sometimes these overwhelming challenges can result in further conflict.  Our Legal Navigation Program has a multi-faceted design to provide personalized service as well as opportunity for independent learning to self-navigate.  The end goal is to increase knowledge, understanding and facilitate a less confusing and/or stressful navigation of the legal system.”

The release states the program features trained navigators who will work closely with youth and their families to understand their specific needs and concerns, providing personalized guidance.

These sessions can also be accessed through the SDRJ website on the client’s own time.

Through informational sessions, participants will gain a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities within the legal system. SDRJ states they can also leverage partnerships with local legal professionals, community organizations, and support services to offer additional assistance to navigating legal challenges. These partnerships enhance the program's effectiveness and expand the resources available to participants.

SDRJ states that by fostering dialogue and understanding, “we aim to address underlying issues and promote positive outcomes for all involved.”

The Legal Navigation Program for Youth and their Families is now accepting referrals and inquiries. For more information or to get involved, please contact the program director Pina Catalano at [email protected].
