reThink Green, in collaboration with Commuter Challenge, is calling on commuters to find alternate, more eco-friendly methods of transportation to and from their workplace.

This annual event runs during Canadian Environment Week June 2-8.

“Now that the sun is out and the snow is gone, I love getting the chance to bike to work every day, and knowing how much greenhouse gas emissions I am reducing is just the cherry on top," said Dave St. Georges, Green Economy North Program Director.

Sustainable commuting provides numerous benefits, including improved air quality. It promotes a stronger connection between community and environment, which is sometimes overlooked during the hustle and bustle of the workweek.

An eco-friendly commute can be a refreshing new way to get to work, especially after a cold and snowy winter.

The Commuter Challenge presents a fun way for local businesses to participate in reducing the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions. It also demonstrates the work being done locally to improve the sustainability of the city and surrounding area.

"I've been participating in Greater Sudbury's Commuter Challenge since the first challenge was issued in 2012," said Ward 9 Coun. Deb McIntosh.  "The annual week-long event challenges me to rethink how I reach my destinations and kick starts my fair weather cycling to work."

To register as an individual visit CommuterChallenge.ca, or go here to register as a workplace.

Prizes will be awarded in a variety of categories, including office with the most kilometers logged, individual with the most kilometers logged, and workplace with the largest number of active participants.
