An 89-year-old retired Calgary surgeon followed in the footsteps of his three granddaughters on Wednesday when he graduated with a bachelor of science degree in geology from Laurentian University.

“Way to go, Grandpa!” shouted Stephanie Jaworski as Dr. Robert-Guy Williams accepted his degree from university President Dr. Judith Woodsworth.

Jaworski and her sisters Patricia and Maria have degrees in mining engineering.

Dr. Williams embodies the term lifelong learner, Jaworski said. He got his first degree in general science in 1941 from the University of Alberta. Two years later, he graduated with a doctor of medicine. He did postgraduate work in surgery in Toronto and Edinburgh, Scotland, then started to practise at the Calgary General Hospital. At the age of 68, he got his bachelor of arts degree in economics.
