Events will take the chill out of Family Day

Well, at least most of us don't have to work.

After temperatures dipped below the -30 C mark overnight Sunday, expect a windchill of -40 Monday morning, 'warming' to -28 in the afternoon. But after nearly a week of bone-chilling temperatures, residents can expect a little warmer week ahead.

Overnight lows Monday will reach -20, according to Environment Canada. Wind chill will be around -27. But it will be cloud Tuesday with a with 60 per cent chance of snow. High -12. Expect much the same Wednesday, with highs of -14 and lows -18, and a 40 per cent chance of snow.

There are still lots of ways you can enjoy Family Day, however, with a host of events planned across the city. For example, Valleyview Community Church presents its Family Fun Day and Open House from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Activities include a ribbon-cutting for the Valley East Seniors' Club, which is opening at the church, as well as games, face-painting, Gospel Elvis in concert, a book sale and a hotdog lunch. The church is located at 2891 Martin Rd. in Blezard Valley. Phone 705-897-6200.

Science North is marking Family Day with special workshops. Take part in a variety of family-oriented science experiments, take-home activities, and group challenges. More information is available at www.sciencenorth.ca.

While Tom Davies Square will be closed today, along with libraries, the city is offering some Family Day deals at some municipal facilities. Rates at Adanac Ski Hill will be $10 for junior half day, $12 for the full day. Rates for students and seniors are $11 half day, $13 for the whole day. Adults pay $12 for half a day, $16 for the full day.

All users pay $5,50 for the full day at Capreol and Lively Ski Hills for skiing and snowboarding between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you want to stay inside, public swimming rates Monday are $2.25 for adults, $1.75 for children. A family of six or less can swim for $5.50.

Public swim times are as follows:

– Gatchell Pool Family Swim: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

– Nickel District Pool Family Swim: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

– Onaping Pool Family Swim: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

– R. G. Dow Pool Family Swim: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

– Howard Armstrong Recreation Centre Family Swim: 1 p.m. to 2:25 p.m. - Public Swim: 2:30 p.m. to 3:55 p.m.

Want to enjoy winter sports without spending too much time outside? Family Day also means reduced rates for public skating at all municipal arenas – adults skate for $2.25, youths for $1.75, and a family of six or less for $4.75.

Public skate times are as follows:

– Cambrian Arena: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

– Capreol Community Centre/Arena No. 2 Ice Pad: The Capreol Lions Club is hosting a free community skate with free hot chocolate from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome.

– Carmichael Arena: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

– Centennial Community Centre/Arena: 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

– Dr. Edgar Leclair Community Centre/Arena: 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

– Garson Community Centre/Arena: 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

– Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex No. 1 Ice Pad: 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

– I.J. Coady Memorial Arena: 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

– McClelland Community Centre/Arena: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

– Raymond Plourde Arena: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

– Sudbury Community Arena: Enjoy a free family skate hosted by RBC at the Sudbury Arena from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., where you can meet 2014 RBC Sochi Olympic Champion Brad Jacobs, skip of the mens gold medal curling team.

– T.M. Davies Community Centre/Arena: 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

– Toe Blake Memorial Arena: 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The Ramsey Lake Skate Path, Queen's Athletic Skating Oval and local neighbourhood outdoor rinks will also be open, weather permitting.

Events aside, Greater Sudbury Transit buses will operate on a Sunday schedule, while Greater Sudbury landfills, recycling centre, garbage and recycling collection are unaffected by the holiday.
