The holiday season is the time of year for family, friends and festivities. The Sudbury Regional Hospital (HRSRH) Emergency Department and Trauma Program encourage the community to follow these injury prevention safety messages to ensure every citizen has a safe, healthy and happy holiday season.

Don’t drink and drive. Impaired driving is the number one cause of traffic fatalities — death and injuries do not take a holiday. Alcohol, drugs, and even some prescription medications diminish the skills and capabilities required for operating motor vehicles, such as cars, ATV’s and snowmobiles. Winter road and trail conditions demand a driver's full attention. Plan ahead  — call for a ride, arrange for a designated driver or ensure you have a safe place to stay.

Don’t speed. About one-third of traffic fatalities are speed-related. With the increase in holiday traffic and excitement to arrive at destinations, stress levels may rise and some drivers may take unnecessary chances and drive at excessive speeds, putting everyone on the road at risk of injury. Be patient — your life and the lives of others may depend on it.

Be prepared for winter travel. If travelling this holiday season, ensure someone is aware of your travel route and always check the latest road conditions before you leave. Be prepared for vehicular difficulties by creating a winter driving survival kit, including a candle, small tin can, matches, a blanket and a shovel. If possible, check in with your destination to stay informed of road conditions and inform them of your progress.

Slow down, practice moderation, plan ahead, and take care of your health and each other, a press release stated. Enjoy the holiday season, and ensure your holiday memories will be happy ones.
