One of this year’s 10 most influential Hispanic Canadians lives right here in Greater Sudbury.
Dr. Antonio Caycedo, a surgeon at Health Sciences North, received the honour last week at a ceremony in Toronto. The 10 Most Influential Hispanic Canadians list is a program of the Canadian Hispanic Business Alliance, in cooperation with the Canadian Hispanic Congress.
The award was presented by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States, Luis Almagro Lemes of Uruguay.
Born and raised in Colombia, Caycedo graduated from medical school in Bogota before moving to Canada in 2004, where he attended the University of Ottawa, completing a residency in general surgery. A clinical fellowship in colorectal surgery followed at Western University in London.
In 2011, Caycedo relocated to Greater Sudbury to establish a practice in colorectal surgery at HSN, introducing several new surgical procedures and technologies since his arrival. He also serves as an assistant professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
In 2012, the hospital said he performed the hospital’s first trans-anal endoscopic microsurgery, with a piece of medical equipment never before used in Canada. At the time, the surgery had only been performed in Ottawa and Toronto.
In 2015, HSN said Caycedo performed the hospital’s first transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME), an advanced form of colorectal cancer surgery done in only a handful of hospitals in Canada.
Caycedo said he is humbled by the Top 10 distinction.
