The University of Sudbury is accepting submissions for the second edition of its “Voices of Indigenous Youth: Indigenous Me” writing contest for grade 7-12 First Nation, Métis and Inuit students.

The Indigenous Me contest will feature creative writing pieces by youth that celebrate Indigenous cultural pride.

Students are encouraged to submit a self-reflective composition highlighting their perspectives on topics such as cultural expressions, teachings and experiences they feel honor their Indigenous heritage.

As a bilingual and tri-cultural institution with a long-standing dedication to promoting the culture and traditions of Indigenous peoples, the University of Sudbury aims for this contest to provide a platform to Indigenous youth so that many can hear their stories and their perspectives.

Successful submissions will be published in a magazine format, in print and online, and distributed in the community among partnered organizations, as well as displayed on the University’s website.

Prizes will be awarded to the top two writers based on criteria of creativity, engagement, insightfulness and character.

Last year’s winners, Ruby Sage-Wolfe and Katiya Gareau-Jones, got to present excerpts of their submissions in front of a crowd at the annual Awards Ceremony, and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

“We look forward to seeing what local talented youth will submit this year,” said a press release from the federated university.

Submissions will be accepted until Feb. 28.
