Grade 7 and 8 students from R.L. Beattie Public School are moving to Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School, effective September 2016. The move was approved at the regular meeting of Rainbow District School Board on March 22.

“R.L. Beattie Public School has experienced a significant growth in enrolment over the past five years, a trend that is expected to continue,” said director of education Norm Blaseg.

“Despite three recent additions, there is not enough space to accommodate all students in the coming school year. More importantly, students will benefit from enhanced educational opportunities in the secondary school environment.”

Grade 7 and 8 students will have a distinct and separate wing at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School. Renovations, which will begin this spring, include a new gym.

Floor plans of the Grade 7 and 8 wing were presented at a public meeting on Feb. 25, where parents/guardians and students shared their feedback.

“We would like to thank everyone who provided their input,” said Blaseg. “We look forward to welcoming Grade 7 and 8 students at Lo-Ellen Park this fall.”

Grade 7 and 8 enrolment at R.L. Beattie Public School currently represents 13 per cent of the total enrolment at the school. An exception to an accommodation review, in keeping with the Ministry of Education pupil accommodation review guideline, was approved at the regular board meeting Feb. 23.
