Laurentian University has commissioned a study to look at setting up a law school on its main campus in Sudbury. The university is a bilingual, tri-cultural institution. The proposed new law school will reflect the needs for legal education and legal services to include francophone and aboriginal communities.

“Laurentian, in collaboration with a community group formed by lawyers, is drafting a plan for a law school,” said Vice-President Dr. Susan Silverton. “The feasibility study will provide critical information to enable us to assess the financial and market realities the university and its students face.”

Sixteen of Canada’s universities offer common law degrees. All six schools are in the southern part of the province. Students in the north who wish to study law must travel to southern Ontario or another province or seek the equivalent to the Canadian common law degree in another country.
