Sudbury New Democrats and social activists are expected to be in attendance Wednesday at Steelworkers Hall on Brady Street when the shortlist for this year's Social Justice Awards will be unveiled.

In all, nine candidates in three categories will be announced as being in the running for the awards, which will be held May 23 at the Steelworkers hall. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath is expected to be in attendance at the ceremony.

The awards are an “annual recognition of commitment to an equal and just society,” a press release said.

“These candidates have a diverse background. Some work in health care, others in academics, and others are strictly volunteers,” said Paul Loewenberg, president of the Sudbury NDP, in the news release.

“Whether it's income inequality, access to vital health services, a push against government austerity, or correcting Canada’s long-lasting indifference to the challenges of our First Nations people – these candidates have shown they will not accept the status quo.”
