Greater Sudbury citizens are being encouraged to participate in a postcard campaign to get more money from the federal government.

Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci and Ward 11 Councillor Janet Gasparini say the federal government has huge surpluses, but fails to transfer enough money to the province or spend enough money on its own programs.

The postcards say the fiscal imbalance between the federal government and the province is costing Greater Sudbury citizens $13.8 million a year.

The lack of federal transfer payments leads to the deterioration of the health care and education because the province doesn't have enough money to put into these sectors, says Gasparini.

The province also has a hard time giving enough cash to municipalities to pay for infrastructure like roads and culverts, the city councillor says.

She's also concerned the federal government isn't properly funding its own homelessness grant programs, leading to the downloading of these services to municipalities.
