Power is now fully restored in New Sudbury.

Earlier this afternoon, a piece of equipment failed at the Gemmell Substation, which cut electricity to approximately 1,500 customers in the Westmount, Gemmell, Hawthorne area, including part of the New Sudbury Centre, and Falconbridge Rd.

The outage began at 2:46 p.m.

By 3:50 p.m. Greater Sudbury Hydro was able to begin re-routing power in sections, and at 4:15 p.m. it was believed that all customers were back on-line, but a missed switch kept the area between Churchill, Gemmell, Lasalle and Falconbridge Rd in the dark.

Finally at 4:38 p.m everyone affected had their power restored.

The failed equipment is currently being repaired. When Sudbury Hydro reverts back to their normal supply configuration, customers may notice a blip in their supply, but it should only be momentary.

Original story:

Greater Sudbury Utilities is now saying the power outage in New Sudbury is more widespread than originally thought.

The outage is affecting the New Sudbury Centre as well as part of Falconbridge.

The problem appears to have originated at the Gemmell Substation.

Close to 1,000 customers are without power in New Sudbury in the Gemmell/Hawthorne/Westmount area.

At this point, Sudbury Hydro does not know the cause of the outage, but crews are on their way to troubleshoot the problem.

There is no estimated time of restoration available at this point.
