The province is helping Laurentian University conduct research into controlling mosquito populations and reducing the spread of diseases through a $210,000 investment from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).

"I am very pleased that the innovative research undertaken in Sudbury could help reduce the spread of diseases in our province, while simultaneously decreasing the amount of pesticides in our environment," said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci, in a release.

"I also believe that new economic opportunities could emerge from the development of this technology."

This funding will support a study of Artificial Breeding Pools (ABPs) under the direction of Dr. Gerardo Ulibari of the university's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

ABPs are an environmentally friendly way to control mosquitoes. They compel female mosquitoes to lay their eggs in a solution from which the larvae can then be extracted and eliminated. This project will research the effectiveness of automating the system.

"Our government is committed to investing in emerging technologies that will help diversify the northern economy and create new jobs," concluded Bartolucci.  "The disease control aspect of this research ties in to our efforts to grow a thriving bio-economy in Northern Ontario."
