City expected to pass 2017 budget tonight:

The city's finance committee is meeting Tuesday afternoon with an eye on finalizing its $530 million budget for 2017. Expected to include a 3.6 per cent property tax hike, the budget would be formally approved at city council's next meeting, Dec. 13. Vigils mark anniversary of l'École Polytechnique shootings:

Twenty-seven years ago, on Dec. 6, 1989, 14 young women were murdered at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal in an act of gender-based violence. Dec. 7 has been designated National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Two vigils will be held in Sudbury today. Find out more here.

ICYMI: Demotions deemed appropriate for GSPS constables:

The Police Services Act hearings for Const. Christopher Labreche and Const. Kathryn Howard resumed Dec. 5 at Tom Davies Square. Superintendent Gould of the Waterloo Regional Police Service deemed it appropriate that both officers be demoted. Read the full story here.

Huntington University students giving back to long-term care residents:

Students from the Huntington University Gerontology Society (HUGS) have collected more than 75 gifts for long-term care residents in Greater Sudbury. The packages, donated as part of Huntington University’s 2nd annual Christmas Giving Tree campaign, will be presented to long-term care residents at Finlandia Village, Pioneer Manor and Extendicare-York. ICYMI: Drivers will have to slow down on MR80: 

The city's operations committee voted Monday to lower the speed limit along a section of MR80 in the Valley. The decision comes after the roads department received a petition signed by 37 people who wanted speeds along the busy roadway reduced to 60 km/h from 80 km/h in the area from Yorkshire Drive to Dominion Drive.
