College students rallying today near Cambrian:

Students from both Cambrian College and College Boreal will be rallying today against a faculty strike that has kept them out of classes for four weeks. The 12,000 faculty members, represented by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), went on strike on Oct. after a deal could not be reached with the College Employers Council (CEC). The two sides have still not reached an agreement and students are at risk of losing their fall semester. Sudbury.com will bring you coverage from the rally so be sure to check back with us.

Police think they've got one of the 'despicable' poppy donation thieves:

Greater Sudbury Police have made an arrest in the case of the missing poppy donation boxes. Starting Nov. 4, businesses and members of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 7 have reported the theft of 20 poppy boxes, contained both poppies and an undisclosed amount of money, from store countertops. Over the past week, police said in a news release this morning that members of the Break, Enter and Robbery (B.E.A.R.) Unit, with the assistance of uniform patrol, have been investigating each theft complaint and working with local business owners to secure surveillance video footage from each incident. As a result, a 29-year-old Sudbury man has been arrested in connection with the thefts. Full story can be found here.

Maley extension making good progress:

More than three decades in the making, progress so far on building the $80 million Maley Drive extension has been quick, reporters were told Friday. Phase 1 of the project is near completion, and drivers could begin using a new interchange north of Lasalle Boulevard on Notre Dame Avenue as early as January, weather permitting. "We're hoping to get this section open in early December of this year," said roads director David Shelsted, at a Friday news conference at the construction site. Mayor Brian Bigger said he was impressed by how much progress has been made so far on the project, which is slated for completion in 2019. Find more on this story here.

Operations suspended at Coleman Mine due to repair work:

Operations at Vale's Coleman Mine in Levack have been suspended for an indefinite period of time due to what are being called, "necessary repairs". Vale spokesperson Angie Robson issued a statement on Nov. 10, indicating that employees at the mine have been notified that their shifts have been cancelled until further notice. "As part of an ongoing maintenance review, a decision has been made to expedite some necessary repairs to the shaft’s ventilation compartment at Coleman Mine, which has resulted in operations at Coleman Mine being suspended," said Robson in her statement. The repair work is expected to continue into next week.

Ground veal sold at Food Basics recalled due to possible E. coli:

Vantage Foods Inc. has issued a recall on its ground lean veal due to possible E. coli contamination. The meat has been sold in Food Basics supermarket location across Ontario. The possibly contaminated meat has a best before date of Nov. 4, 2017 with a UPC starting with 0 226811. Consumers should not consume the recalled product. This recall was triggered by test results. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation, which may lead to the recall of other products. If other high-risk products are recalled, the CFIA will notify the public. The CFIA is verifying that industry is removing recalled product from the marketplace. There have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of this product. If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.

We're going to the chapel, and we're ... winning an architectural award:

Thorneloe University's chapel has garnered municipal and provincial recognition with two architectural honours. The unique design of the Fielding Memorial Chapel of St. Mark — designed by Sudbury architect Arthur Townend Sr., and built by Neil Smith Construction Ltd. in 1968 thanks to a financial gift from the Fielding family — shared the Ontario Association of Architects Landmark Award this year, alongside the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. The award pays tribute to buildings constructed before 1992 that demonstrate architecture's beauty, endurance and lasting contribution to the community and to society.
