The United Steelworkers Local 6500 re-elected Rick Bertrand as local president during an officers and chief stewards election held April 1 and 2, 2015.

Tim Kiley was re-elected the local's vice-president, and Dave Gordon returns as the financial secretary, while Roger Lafontaine was re-elected as the treasurer.

The union is currently in the middle negotiating a new collective agreement with Vale.

The current five-year collective bargaining agreement between the union and Vale will expire at midnight on May 31, 2015.

Vale and the Steelworkers last entered into negotiations in 2009.

Those contract negotiations led to a bitter year-long strike that started July 13, 2009, and ended July 8, 2010.

It was the longest strike in the company's history – including Inco – and involved more than 3,000 unionized workers.
