Here's what's making headlines in Greater Sudbury today.

Lougheed/Sorbara trial begins Thursday

The trial for prominent local business owner and Liberal fundraiser Gerry Lougheed, Jr. and Pat
Sorbara, Premier Kathleen Wynnes former deputy chief of staff, begins Thursday in Sudbury.

The bribery trial stems from the 2015 Sudbury byelection scandal. Lougheed and Sorbara are accused of offering would-be Liberal candidate Andrew Olivier a job or appointment in exchange for stepping aside and allowing Glenn Thibeault, who was then the NDP MP for Sudbury, to run instead.

Thibeault would go on to defect to the provincial Liberals and win the seat. He now serves as energy
minister in Wynne's cabinet.

Both Wynne and Thibeault have said publicly they will testify in the trial.

Lougheed and Sorbara have maintained their innocence.

Raise a Little Hell at Valley East Days: Trooper playing community festival

Those attending Valley East Days Sept. 8-10 should remember We're Here for a Good Time (Not a Long
Time), and while they're at it they should Raise a Little Hell.

That's because they have a chance to see Canadian rock band Trooper live on stage in the parking lot
of the Hanmer Valley Shopping Centre at around 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8.

Valley East Days organizer Chris Vitiello said he's been trying to bring bigger bands to the
community festival for the last few years.

Last year, April Wine was supposed to play at Valley East Days, but unfortunately backed out at the
last minute because of high winds.

Tough start to the school year: Driver shortage means bus delays

The Sudbury Student Services Consortium issued a release last week advising the media and the public
that a small number of bus routes do not have permanent drivers for the coming school year.

"Due to a school bus driver shortage that is affecting some local companies, a few school buses will
be arriving late and leaving late from school," the consortium said.

Specifically, the consortium said bus routes L004 and L016 (New Sudbury and South End) will be
running "very late" for the start of the year.

The morning pickups on these routes will be approximately 45 minutes later than scheduled, the
consortium reported, while the afternoon drop-offs will be delayed by some 30 minutes.

Kirwan vs. Robinson: The arena debate

We’ll be sitting down for a live debate with Ward 5 Coun. Bob Kirwan and LU economics prof Dr. David Robinson. Kirwan believes The Kingsway is the best spot for the event centra; Robinson says downtown. Both say the other is wrong. Sudbury.com will bring the two men together for a battle of wits and words on the question: Did city council make a mistake by choosing the True North Strong event centre project?
