Apartment building evacuated due to unsafe living conditions

Dave Burns has lived in his single-family home next to the small, brick apartment building at 246 Montcalm Ave. for about three decades.  He describes that apartment building in the Uptown neighbourhood near Marymount College and Collège Notre-Dame as “a beautiful building” and “historic.”

But the building was condemned Saturday morning by local emergency personnel after they realized the structure had no heat, water or working fire alarms. Its residents were evacuated and are now housed in a local hotel by the Red Cross.

Tying dogs up outside — even in extreme cold — not against law, says SPCA

As the Ontario SPCA faces criticism from animal rights activists that it's not doing enough to protect dogs tied up outside in the extreme cold, an SPCA spokesperson said this practice isn't against the law. The law, does, however, require that dogs that primarily live outside to have a weatherproofed, insulated doghouse with adequate bedding, said Jennifer Bluhm, deputy chief of the Ontario SPCA.

“If the dog is tied outside with a chain or rope, that chain or rope needs to be at least three meters long to allow the dog to safely move in and out unrestricted of that shelter,” she said. “That tether must allow that dog to have appropriate water and shelter at all times.”

Exhibit featuring 2,000 moccasin tops remembers those whose lives were sadly cut short

The 2,000 vamps (moccasin tops) are spread out artfully on the floor in a large room at the McEwen School of Architecture.
Most of them designed for women's moccasins, many are beaded, but some are painted, adorned with fur or even made with fish scales. They feature animals, flowers and even women's faces.
The vamps are part of the Walking With Our Sisters Memorial Art Installation, which has been touring the country since 2013. It will be on display at the architecture school until Jan. 17. Each pair of vamps represents one missing or murdered Indigenous woman.
