Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek said he's in “near-remission” from Stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

The Sudbury native was diagnosed with cancer in March.

“It’s kind of mind-boggling,” the 78-year-old told People magazine.

Although the cancer has only a nine-per-cent survival rate, Trebek said his doctors told him he's has been responding very well to chemotherapy.

“The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory … some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 per cent,” he said.

Sudbury has shown its support for one of its most famous sons. MP Paul Lefebvre invited people to sign a Greater Sudbury flag with well-wishes for Trebek, which was presented to the TV show host in Ottawa on May 13.

As well, the folks behind the Up Here festival brought back their Alex Trebek pins, which they sold to benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Canada Foundation.

The news is positive, but Trebek says he still has several rounds of chemotherapy to get, with high hopes that that will push him into remission.

And while the cancer and the chemo have been difficult, Trebek said the good wishes of "a couple million people" have been incredibly helpful.
