Happy Canada Day! Union Gas announced today the Ontario Energy Board has approved a rate change for natural gas effective July 1.

For Union Gas customers in Northern Ontario (and those in eastern Ontario, too), this means an annual net increase of about $15, which represents an increase of about two per cent of their natural gas bill.

For Union Gas residential customers in southern Ontario, the annual net increase is about $22, or three per cent of their natural gas bill.

In a news release, Union Gas said the rate increase mainly reflects an increase in the market prices the company expects to pay for natural gas supplies for the next year, as well as adjustments to recover the difference between the forecast for natural gas market prices and transportation services and the actual costs from prior periods, which varies by location.

The company said, seasonal market fluctuations aside, the average natural gas bill for a residential Union Gas customer is about $210 less today than five years ago.
