"This is the fastest growing campaign in Canada," said United Way president  and Northern Life publisher Abbas Homayed.

"It was an honour to work with you all," he told more than 300  people attending the volunteer lunch today (Thursday) at the Caruso Club.

This year 55 community service organizations will receive United Way funding, six more agencies than in 2006.

Mark Cutifani, the honorary campaign chair, said he expects the final tally of the campaign will be closer to $1.9 million.

This year's campaign organizers set the goal of "towards $2 million." Cutifani said he thinks that goal will be reached in future campaigns.

"The way this community works together is impressive," said Cutifani,

Cutifani is the chief operating officer of CVRD Inco. He thanked CVRD-Inco employees and members of the Steelworkers for their contributions to United Way. Employee donations doubled this year, and the company matched that donation.

The Steelworkers were presented with a special campaign plaque for their generosity to the community.
