The investigation surrounding a blaze at the former site of the Azilda lumberyard yesterday afternoon has been transferred to a criminal investigations case.

According to a witness, it took fire officials about an hour to extinguish the blaze at a former lumberyard in Azilda yesterday.
The Fire Marshall?s office was called in this morning after preliminary investigations last night pointed to arson as the potential cause of the fire.

According to Staff Sgt. Robert Keetch with the Greater Sudbury Police Services, witnesses are being questioned although there were no suspects or arrests made as of the Northern Life?s publication deadline on Thursday.

He said preliminary estimates peg the damages to the storage shed on the site at around $100,000. ?It was really big,? said Natalie Lafontaine of Azilda who witnessed the blaze. ?The whole sky was black and there were ashes falling everywhere, I had a couple of ashes fall on my head.?

Under a blackened sky, Lafontaine said crowds of people from Azilda turned out to see the destruction first-hand.

Police are encouraging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 675-8477 or 1-800-222-8477.
