Coniston man faces impaired driving charges

On Oct. 3, at 5:18 p.m., officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a traffic complaint on Hwy. 144 near Halfway Provincial Park in the Township of Antrim.

Investigation revealed a grey pickup truck was southbound on Hwy. 144, being operated in an erratic manner, travelling at fluctuating speeds and swerving all over of the roadway.

The vehicle was observed to swerve off the roadway and strike steel guiderails along the southbound shoulder.

Despite being involved in a collision, the vehicle continued southbound on Highway 144. The vehicle was observed turning off Highway 144 onto Old Cartier Road.

As a result of the investigation, police were able to locate and stop the involved vehicle on Old Cartier Road.

A 49-year-old man from Coniston, was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Drive While Ability Impaired, contrary to the Criminal Code.
  • Driving With More Than 80 Milligrams, contrary to the Criminal Code.
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to the Criminal Code.

The man's driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle he was operating was impounded for seven days.

The accused will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury, on Oct 28 to answer to his charges.

The OPP is reminding motorists that there is no safe amount of alcohol or drug consumption when driving. Anyone who suspects a driver is driving while impaired is urged to call police by dialing 9-1-1 immediately.
