A young man caught three times in a few weeks selling crack cocaine to an undercover police officer in April and May was sentenced to two years in a federal penitentiary Thursday (Nov. 16).

John Greer Jr., 23, pleaded guilty to possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking. He was also convicted of several other offenses, including threatening a jail guard while in custody at the Sudbury District Jail, but received concurrent sentences on all those charges.

Federal Crown prosecutor Richard Huneault told the court Greer sold almost 2.5 ounces of crack cocaine to the undercover officer during three separate transactions.

The officer used "buy money" of $3,800 to purchase the illicit drug.

As part of his sentence, Greer had to forfeit the $3,800 seized by police and all other drugs and drug paraphernalia that was found in his residence when he was arrested.

Greer was released on bail after the drug raid, but was re-arrested last month and spent 30 days in pre-trial custody before Thursday's sentencing hearing.

Huneault said a clear message must be sent to anyone willing to deal crack cocaine they will pay a very stiff penalty if caught.
