A cyclist and motorist collided Wednesday, resulting in minor injuries and sparking concern from police about bicycle safety.

Around 12:50 p.m., uniform officers responded to a motor vehicle accident in the area of Newgate and Notre Dame Avenue. A motorist had stopped at a red light and was preparing to turn right onto Notre Dame.

A cyclist who was riding on the sidewalk southbound, proceeded through the pedestrian crosswalk, where the cyclist and motorist collided. The collision was not serious with the cyclist receiving very minor injuries.

With the warm weather and summer school holidays upon us there is an increase in the number of cyclists in the city, a police press release stated. Motorists are encouraged to be extra vigilant for cyclists and to share the roadway.

Cyclists are likewise encouraged to obey the rules of the road and to be mindful of vehicular traffic, which may not be aware of their presence.  As well, cyclists are reminded that sidewalks are restricted for the use of pedestrians.

Parents are reminded that young persons and children under the age of 16 are required bylaw to wear a bicycle helmet. Those who are over the age of 16 are encouraged to wear a helmet to minimize injury in the event of an accident.
