A 33-year-old driver with blood alcohol more than three times over the legal limit was arrested Feb. 10 after he stopped to buy gas at a Val Caron gas bar.

At around 12:20 a.m., the man went inside of the gas bar to pay for gas he had not yet pumped. After he was told he had to get the gas first, he returned to his vehicle and managed to pump $2.08 worth of gas.

When he came back in to pay, witnesses dissuaded him from driving away because he displayed obvious signs of impairment.

Before police could be called, a police officer stopped at the gas bar to buy a juice.

Based on the observations of witnesses and the officer, the man was arrested for having care and control of a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol.

He was then escorted to police headquarters, where he provided breath samples. His readings were in excess of three times over the legal limit. The suspect also faces charges of over 80 mg and breach of probation.

The suspect was due to appear in bail court Feb. 10.

"The Greater Sudbury Police Service recognizes the actions of the individuals at the scene; simply delaying this person from leaving in his vehicle may have prevented a tragedy," stated a release from the police.

"Citizens are not expected to put themselves at risk, but there are times where just 'getting involved' may make a huge impact."
