A police officer and two paramedics were taken to Health Sciences North for an examination of potential communicable diseases after an impaired man spit in their faces.

Greater Sudbury Police Service on May 16 was called just after midnight to assist EMS with a combative drunk man on Bancroft Drive. As the police arrived, paramedics were attempting to help the man.

The man spit in the face of one of the paramedics, and on the leg of the other.

As officers tried to help gain control, the drunk man spat in the face of one of the officers.

The accused was advised of the provisions within Canada’s Mandatory Blood Testing Act, where he is compelled by the courts to provide a blood sample to determine if he was a carrier of a communicable disease. This would be done to quickly determine which, if any treatments, the exposed victim need receive.

However, the accused voluntarily provided a blood sample at the hospital the same evening.

He is charged with two counts of assault, assaulting a police officer and being intoxicated in a public place. He was held pending a bail hearing.
