Fatal crash earlier today claims life of 73-year-old man

Police believe driver suffered a medical emergency while behind the wheel when he lost control and struck a home

Greater Sudbury Police say the driver who lost his life in a single-vehicle crash today suffered a medical emergency.

At just after 3 a.m. on Sept. 29, officers were dispatched to a single vehicle collision on  Municipal Road 80 (MR80) at Dugas Street in Hanmer. 

“Police, City of Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services and City of Greater Sudbury Fire Services attended the scene and located the driver, who was unresponsive,” a press release from GSPS states. “First responders began life-saving measures and paramedics  transported the driver to the hospital.”

The 73-year-old man was pronounced dead at Health Sciences North. 

“Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. His name will not be released out of  respect for the family’s wishes.”

Police say the investigation determined the vehicle was eastbound on MR80 when the driver suffered a medical emergency, lost control and struck a residence. No one was inside the home was injured as a result.

Members of our Traffic Management Unit continue to investigate the collision and MR80 remains closed at St. Mary Street.
