Over the course of the last few days Greater Sudbury Police Service has been kept quite busy dealing with drivers operating vehicles after having consumed alcohol.

On April 8 at approximately 10:40 p.m. uniform officers attended in the area of Eyre Street in response to an accident.  The 27-year-old male driver of the vehicle responsible for the accident, was arrested and transported to police headquarters.  The results of his breath tests revealed that he was almost three times the legal limit.

Shortly later that night uniform officers responded to a second accident in the area of Paris Street and Walford Road.  The 42-year-old male driver was arrested and transported to police headquarters.  Once again this driver's breath test revealed him to be almost three times the legal limit.

On April 9 a 48-year-old male driver struck a train in the area of O'Neil Drive in Garson at approximately 11:00 a.m..  This driver had in excess of three times the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

On April 10 at 1 a.m., while on patrol, a uniform officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Leo Street in Azilda.  The 46-year-old male driver was found to be under the influence of alcohol and was taken into custody.  His breath tests revealed that he had more then double the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.

Also on April 10, at 3:15 a.m., GSPS received an erratic driving complaint in the area of Elm Street.  The vehicle was located in the Chelmsford area by GSPS officers and the 20-year-old female driver was arrested and transported to police headquarters.  Her breath tests were also over the legal limit.

That same day at 4 a.m. GSPS received a report of a possible impaired driver in the area of Regent Street.  This driver was located by the OPP further down Hwy 69 and taken into custody by the OPP.  GSPS assisted by performing the breath tests.  This 45-year-old male was found to have more then double the legal limit.

At 6 a.m., there was an accident reported in the Chelmsford area.  The female driver was found to be impaired and was taken in custody.  Once she was at the police station she refused to provide breath samples. Her charges include impaired driving and refusing to provide a breath sample.

Although there were not serious injuries in any of these incidents the potential exists for much more serious consequences.  There was significant damage to some of the vehicles involved in these incidents.

The drivers all face a variety of driving related offences and have been given 90 day suspensions to start.  These charges range from impaired driving, exceeding the legal limit, driving under suspension.  If convicted they face an additional year of suspension, fines and a possible jail term.  Once the suspension is completed they are also required to install an interlock ignition in any vehicle they drive which is quite costly.

Citizens are encouraged to plan ahead and make arrangements for safe transportation if they plan on drinking.
