Local residents should be wary of letters from an insurance company identified as "SC Capital" on Eglington Avenue in Toronto, notifying the reader of an approved jewelry claim of $17,400, warn Greater Sudbury police.

The letter comes with an official-looking money order for the amount, but indicates that the money will not be released until the recipient sends a $300.00 cheque in order for the money to be released.

Greater Sudbury police emphasize that legitimate companies will not require payments to release moneys owed.

According to a press release, frauds and scams are "still very common," and those involved can be very convincing. They will provide documents that appear official and legitimate.

Fraudulent activities should be reported to the Greater Sudbury police at 675-9171, or Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501.
